Art Forms I Fancy: Graffiti

There are some who say graffiti is just vandalism and destruction of property. In a lot of instances, that’s all it is.  But sometimes graffiti or street art or murals or whatever you want to call it, add a really nice touch to an otherwise drab and boring pile of bricks.  There were so many tweets, it was really hard to narrow it down to a few.

Did you know that China invites artists from around the world ~ like Russia, France, Belgium, South America, etc. ~ to use their artistic talents and create street art on the walls of various buildings in cities like Shanghai?

I discovered an artist named Sonny Sundancer.  He is impressive!  I had a choice between lions and tigers and bears.  Also zebras and the rhinoceros.  I picked the lion to showcase his talent.

I searched for graffiti art inspired by jazz legends.  Results included Miles Davis, Roy Eldridge, a cool mural in New Orleans, and Snoopy!  What??!  You didn’t know Snoopy could play the saxophone?  LOL.

Art Forms I Fancy: Mosaics ~ Ancient and Modern

I love the art of mosaics.  It is amazing the art people can create from broken pieces of almost anything and smooth tiles.  Years ago, we rented a house in Cedar Park, Texas, and the first thing I noticed when I walked into the house was the kitchen.  The tiles on the wall were a beautiful mosaic/  It was like a still life painting of fruit; only it was tiles.  Gorgeous!

Historians of antiquity give the ancient Greeks the credit for making the mosaic an accepted and respected art form.  However, mosaics originated in Mesopotamia about 4000 years ago.  The Romans who seemed to believe that everything the Greeks did was worthy of their admiration used mosaics as decorative accents.  Mosaic art could be found in public buildings and private residences throughout ancient Rome.  Today mosaics are everywhere!  Even in video games.

Artists I Fancy: A Brief Intro to Impressionism

The term “impressionism” was first used in 1874, and its initial usage was not very complimentary. A critic was making a sarcastic remark about one of Monet's landscape paintings. Not allowing an unfavorable judgment to cramp his style, Claude Monet (1840 – 1926), working with Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841 – 1919), developed the technique of broken-color painting. These two artists are recognized as the founders of the art form known as Impressionism.  Others who were also a part of the group known as impressionist painters include: Édouard Manet (1832 – 1883), Jacob Camille Pissarro (1831 – 1903), Paul Cézanne (1839 – 1906), and Edgar Hilaire Germain Degas (1834 – 1917).
