Adding to My Collection for Tolkien Enthusiasts

One of my hobbies is collecting tidbits about Tolkien.  My first JDV blog post. "Bio Sketch of J. R. R. Tolkien, Author of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy", shared a link from a page I had published almost 10 years ago, along with some other links of interest.

Found an absolutely fabulous blog post to add to my collection, titled "Tolkien’s Angels: A question of belief".  This is from a blog published by Carolee Croft and it is a guest post written by epic fantasy author R K Lander.

“If you are not a Tolkien geek, haven’t read the Silmarillion, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, or just haven’t read about elves in mythology, your impression of an elf is probably ... tall angels with long hair and flighty voices who dance to the lyre and cry woeful tears as epic poems are recited. They float angelically around majestic gardens of blooming flowers …”

NOTE: Had to reshare this post not because it's a great addition to my collection for Tolkien enthusiasts but also because the images are simply irresistible and also I like angels and elves. Some are creatures of fantasy and some are very real. Do you know which is which?* You may disagree with me but let's not. Let's just enjoy these lovely images.  Shared the one above via Pinterest.  Here's another one from the post.  It's spectacular!  You must visit this lady's blog.  The whole blog is spectacular!

Artists I Fancy: Women Artists of the Renaissance

The wisest man in the world describes a virtuous woman as a savvy businesswoman, among her other many valuable attributes and characteristics. (Proverbs 31).  I say it has nothing to do with gender. If you have a gift or talent, it's a shame and a disgrace for others to try to prevent you from developing it and sharing with others. That's a sin!!

Sharing a link to a slideshow of 10 women who made it in a man's world. (As if ... women haven't always made it.)

Women in Sports History

Since March is Women's History Month, it's a good time to share this short post about women in sports.

The first recorded women's athletic event/competition were the Heraean Games, held in 6th century BCE.  The Heraean Games were similar to the ancient Olympic games but they were for women only and celebrated the goddess Hera.  The historical timeline of women in sports shows that women have been active athletes and have participated in a wide range of competitions including, but not limited to, the Heraean Games, Tsu Chu (ancient Chinese football; also called Cuju), regatta (boat races), golf, cricket, baseball, ice skating, swimming, tennis, hockey and boxing matches.

Women in Boxing?  People did not take women in this sport seriously until the 70s.  In 2012, Women's Boxing became an official Olympic Sport and Nicola Adams (representing Great Britain) won the gold medal. (Ref:  Encyclopedia Brittanica)

Female gladiators are a part of the history of women in sports.
A relief from Halicarnassus (Modern Turkey) shows two female gladiators, one named Amazon and the other named Achilia (the female version of Achilles). The relief celebrates the missio (honorable release) of two female fighters. The relief is on display now at the British Museum.

Check out this quick list posted at Virily.com of significant moments in the history of women in sports.

For Music Lovers: Yanni Live at the Acropolis

Joined a social site a couple of years ago and made some new friends.  I am really enjoying my activity in this social blogging community.  It's called Virily and the members are called Virilyans.  Doesn't that name conjure up images in your mind?  Hail!  We are Virilyans from the planet Virily.  We come in peace.

The website is a peaceful site.  It has a lovely visual display and you can find lots of interesting topics from fashion to home decor to art to general "feel good" news about people doing nice things for other people.  My latest post is about  "Yanni, Live at the Acropolis".  I like to chat about music that I like and I've published several discussions (see links below).

Freelance Work : Writing Articles for Rational Mind.club

It's the beginning of the 3rd month of 2019 and so far it has been a very good year for my freelance work efforts. A fellow blogger and freelance writer offered me a job writing articles for their brand new website called Rational Mind. Accepted the writing work as it seemed like a rational decision. ☺

To date, I have published 5 articles (see below).

Although my goal is to write 3 to 4 articles per month, the site owner is very flexible and allows me to work at my own pace and choose any general topic of interest. I can now add writing for RationalMind.club to my writing work resume.  My hope is that others who are looking to hire a writer might consider making me an offer like my friend did.
