Tragic Love Stories of the Sunflower (A Sophia Loren Film That is Underrated)

Did you know that sunflowers turn to follow the sun? In Greek mythology, a young nymph fell in love with the sun god Apollo. What do you think the gods did to her?  It's a tragic love story.

But the sunflower has more than one love story.

Do you enjoy old movies? Are you also a fan of Sophia Loren? If so, you may have already seen this film, but if you haven't, it comes highly recommended. (That means my husband liked it! ☺) It's a very moving love story about a newly wedded couple. The woman's husband went to war and did not return home. Even though others tell her he is probably dead, she believes her husband is alive and sets out to prove it.  "In the Soviet Union, Giovanna visits the sunflower fields, where there is supposedly one flower for each fallen Italian soldier, and where the Germans forced the Italians to dig their own mass graves."  (Quote Source

That's it! No spoilers. That's all you'll get out of me, except to say that, this movie would make a great addition to your personal video library. Ms. Loren has starred in many movies that just didn't enough publicity or airtime. This is one of them.  Where to Watch.

Asian Cinema: 2 Chinese Films to Add to Your Watch List

I enjoy watching non-American or foreign films and TV shows. The movies must have English subtitles of course. Watching foreign films is both entertaining and educational. Before we had the Internet, my husband used to scour the foreign films section in the video rental store and rent movies for us to watch. Sometimes we checked out videos from the local public library. Thanks to the Internet, there are lots of films we can watch online, free streaming. Below are 2 Chinese movies that you should add to your watch list if you haven’t seen them already; along with some related links which might enhance your understanding and appreciation.

* The King of Masks Would Be a Great Addition to a Private Video Library

Movie Review: The King of Masks (1999)

* Classic Chinese Movies:
Gong Li is one of my favorite Chinese actresses and any movie she is in, whether she plays a major or a minor role, you will remember her.

* Chinese Masks have long been an integral part of Chinese theatre:
Chinese theatrical masks are used in theater and in celebrations such as Chinese New Year.

* Celebrity Photograph of Gong Li
A sampling of Gong Li films.

Enjoy the Flavor of a Good Turkish Drama ~ Historical or Modern Day

Entertainment has come a long way from back in the 50s and 60s when TV was the new toy. Now we have video streaming and for me, talk about opening up a whole new world, with a new and fantastic point of view. WOW! In our house, we subscribe to a few popular video streaming services. Everybody wants to satisfy their own personal and peculiar tastes, so there's Hulu, Amazon Video, and Netflix. There's also YouTube and a wide range of sites where you can stream movies and TV series from all around the world.

Long story short. Thanks to the wonderful world of video streaming my personal and peculiar tastes now include Turkish dramas. Here are two suggestions (quotes link to my usual style quickie reviews).

Mystery and Historical Period Drama
"... Let's say the series paints a 'true picture'. If so, to be a law enforcement officer in 19th century Istanbul, you never get any rest! The individual criminals, criminal gangs, and criminal organizations from around the world scheme and connive to do everything from murder and robbery to starting wars! ...”

Modern-Day Mystery Drama
20 Dakika ("20 Minutes") is a love story.

Summary of the plot in one sentence?
~ Uuuuhhh ... It's complicated.”

Review of Turkish Drama TV Series: Filinta Mustafa (2014-2016)

“Filinta Mustafa” is a Turkish mystery and historical period drama series, set in 19th century Istanbul, the Ottoman Empire. There are 66 episodes and they aired from 2014 to 2016. Netflix was instrumental in bringing this TV show to an American audience.

A Clear Line Drawn Between Good and Evil

This series draws a clear line between good and evil and makes it plain for you to see.
  • The good guys are really good. Noble and kindhearted. Fiercely dedicated to the pursuit of justice.
  • The bad guys and ladies (there is no discrimination or gender inequality) are extremely bad.
Imagine that this fictional series paints a “true picture” of Sultan Abdülhamid’s era (the Ottoman Empire). If so, then to be a law enforcement officer in 19th century Istanbul, you never get any rest! Not only do you have to deal with the local thugs and scumbags, but you have to wrestle with the foreign criminals from around the world that bring their crime to your city. The English, the French, the Russians, the Americans, the Germans, the Catholics! Oh my!
These people scheme and connive to do everything from murder and robbery to starting wars! Also, we have to throw in corruption among the government officials within the Ottoman Empire. Did I mention the part about young children being kidnapped by a secret organization and trained to become ruthless killers? It’s a good thing Filinta Mustafa has a loyal partner, Blade Ali, who works with him to help fight crime and corruption.

The Shakespearean Lens

The best way to describe this TV series is to compare it to a Shakespeare tragedy. A tragedy written by William Shakespeare can’t be tragic if there aren’t dead bodies lying all over the place! Well! There was one episode where there are so many dead bodies and the crimes which occurred in such a short period of time, the police detective said: “Oy! It’s raining corpses today in Istanbul!”
Yeah. It was that many dead people! More than in a Shakespeare tragedy. You just have to ask: Do evil people ever stop thinking and take a break? Do they ever stop being cruel and ruthless, and just smell the roses? 🙂

Filinta Mustafa is Eye Candy for the Ladies

“Filinta” or “Filinta Mustafa”, is the first Ottoman crime show of television history”. The main character, Mustafa has been styled as “the Turkish Sherlock”. If you are a loyal fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s master detective Sherlock Holmes, you will probably become a fan of his Turkish look-alike.
If I’m being honest, the ladies would love watching this show, whether or not it was interesting. Why? Because they won’t be able to take their eyes off the main character. Filinta Mustafa (played by Onur Tuna) is strikingly handsome. Pure eye candy! Brings a new meaning to “Turkish delight”. Your eyes get glued to him. You follow him everywhere. You see no reason for them to take the camera off of him. If he’s not in the scene, the ladies are thinking: “Hurry up! Get the camera back on Mustafa!”

Summary Review

This is a made for TV crime-solving series that is genuinely delightful entertainment. In each episode, you look forward to the bad guy getting his comeuppance!! There are many bad guys but the main one who is a constant thorn in Mustafa’s side is “Boris Zaharyas”. This guy put the letter “C” in the words criminal, conniving, callous, and cruel! He has got to be brought down! Serhat Tutumluer plays this part and he plays it to the “T”!!
Take your time watching this series. You will want to savor the moment and patiently wait for when Mustafa finally brings down the curtain on Boris!!
My summary review of this series? Never a dull moment.

Google Plus Community for Movie Lovers (Especially Foreign Films)

My definition of “foreign movies” means non-English speaking with English subtitles.

I heart foreign movies and am always searching for the educational and entertaining treasures to be found by viewing foreign cinema. One of the places to find some really good suggestions to add to my watch list is in a Google Plus Community for Movie Lovers. Joined this community in 2013.

Reviewing my community contributions from 2013 to 2017 reveals an interesting variety when it comes to my taste in movies and yes ... before you say it ... some of the movies are not foreign. So glad that this community is still active, still available to the public, and currently boasts over 10,000 members. Here's a recap of some of my shares.

(Sep 2013) “'The Manchurian Candidate' with the Late Frank Sinatra is now a classic and worthy of this distinction. The remake with Denzel Washington? Yeah! I have an opinion.”

(Oct 2014) Must reshare as we just lost this inimitable talent, actor and comedian, Jerry Lewis (1926 -2017), who I will always fondly remember as “The Nutty Professor”.

-The remakes of this old comedy starring #EddieMurphy were not as good as the original. #myopinion”

(Dec 2014) “Thinking of an underrated #ClintEastwood film? Into #oldmovies? This one is a 1975 action and adventure #spythriller. ...”

(Feb 2015) “'New Jack City' (1991) ...  The bad guy had it coming! ...”

(Jul 2016) “ … My take on 3 #Bollywood dramas I thought were intense!”

(Oct 2016) “This is a #Koreandrama #TVseries. ... can't let go of the #soundtrack. ...”

(Mar 2017) “Ever see the movie “The Falcon and the Snowman” (1985)? This is not America.

(Aug 2017) "Classic movies are old movies that never get old."
(You can quote me on that. :) )  ☺
