T is for Throwback Thursday and Tulips

Happy Thursday!
In some social networks or communities, people participate in something called “throwback Thursday”. Ever heard of it? It’s when you share a memory (or something that provokes a memory) of something way back or a throwback to your past.

Most of the time my shares are music videos. But I found this lovely photograph on Tumblr. Photographer Ellen Ericsson shared a picture of tulips.

How is it a throwback?
Well! We enjoy lovely springs here in Austin, Texas, and a myriad of flowers can be seen everywhere. But the tulips are a throwback to when we lived in Maryland. Used to work in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. If you want to work in an environment that will toughen you up and make you see the world as it really is, then D.C. is the place to get a job. It will make you wise to the ways of the world.

But let’s not get off-topic.

Springtime in D.C. is also beautiful because of the cherry blossoms. People even plan their vacations around the blooming of the cherry blossoms. They are glorious!

But springtime in Maryland, in the town of Damascus where I lived (1988 – 1995), will always be remembered because of the gorgeous tulips. Many of my neighbors loved to plant tulips in the garden – all different colors. They were magnificent!

Music Quotes That Move Me ( and Probably Move You Too!)

Once upon a time, there was a community on Google+ for music lovers, and it had a category for “Music Quotes”. It was fun!  You share lyrics or quotes from a song that moves or touches you. Doesn't matter whether you're a fan of the artist's singing or even if you don't really like the song; sometimes certain words strike you. 

Sadly, the community no longer exists and also Google plans to shut down the G+ social network during 2019.

I love the idea of sharing music quotes that move me.  Here's an example. In this example, I also have great respect and admiration for the artist performing. Loyal Tina Turner fan. This is a throwback song from the soundtrack for Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985).  This music video turned Tina Turner into a Post Apocalyptic Rock Goddess.

LYRICS / QUOTES: “There's just one thing you've got to know ... You're one of the living.”

“One of the Living” has a surprisingly rich backstory. It wasn’t just a soundtrack cut; it was a deliberate artistic pivot for Tina Turner, a collaboration with some unexpected rock heavyweights, and a music video that pushed her image into full-blown post-apocalyptic glam.

• “We Don’t Need Another Hero” became the emotional anthem of the film, “One of the Living” was the aggressive, rock-driven opener — and it earned Turner a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. (A Grammy win for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance (1986), but often cited as one of Turner’s most underrated rock performances. Weird (O.o).

• “We Don’t Need Another Hero” is about longing for peace and a future beyond violence; “One of the Living” is about survival in a brutal world.

Who actually played on it?

• Holly Knight (of “Love Is a Battlefield” fame) wrote the song.

• Mike Chapman (Blondie, The Knack) produced it.

• The Fixx’s guitarist, Jamie West-Oram, played the signature guitar parts.

• Tim Cappello, Turner’s famously ripped saxophonist, contributed as well.

The result was a track that blended Turner’s raw power with a distinctly mid 80s rock edge — perfect for the Mad Max universe. This video helped cement Turner’s mid 80s reinvention — not just a comeback pop star, but a cinematic, larger-than-life icon.

Old-Fashioned Family Fun: Throwback: Best Family-Friendly Card Game Ever!

Ever played the Gin Rummy 500 card game?

Do you ever do throwback? “Throwback Thursday is a popular internet trend used among social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.” (Wikipedia) 

What is this trend? Lots of people participate in sharing a bit of nostalgia; memories of stuff they remember from back in their day. You can share any happy memory from your past that produces a vintage vibe. (“Vintage vibe”? Yeah. That’s how I describe it.)

Usually, people post those memories on a Thursday via their social media account and hashtag the content #ThrowbackThursday or #TBT. If I share on any day other than Thursday I just modify the hashtag for my social share as #throwback.

I'm sharing my throwback via this blog. It's a memory of a time when I used to enjoy old-fashioned family fun.  My siblings and I used to play cards.

I grew up in a medium to large size family: 7 boys, 2 girls.

(Some think that’s a large family. Others say if it’s less than 10 kids, it’s medium. Eh!)

With several kids, my mom found a way of maintaining harmony in the family by keeping us busy with puzzles, board games, and card games.

Smart mom! Right? Of course! Those activities don’t require electricity or batteries and can keep kids entertained for hours and hours and hours. Plus. Mom always knew where we were.

I have pleasant childhood memories.  We loved playing Gin Rummy 500.  Have you ever played?

#TBT : The Nostalgia Machine Enhances Your Throwback Vibe

Found this tool via StumbleUpon (now Mix.com).  You can find music that takes you back to your childhood.  It's called “The Nostalgia Machine”?  If you're like me and often share music for #TBT or #throwbackThursday this tool was made for you. 

To get you started you are prompted to pick a childhood year.

'OK! I'll play along. I come from the generation that didn't have the Internet. We listened to music on vinyl records and if we dared scratch a record, on purpose or by accident, our parents took money out of our allowance to pay for damaged goods!
