Auto History: Awesome Tweets About Classic Cars

In 1998, my late husband and I loaded up the trucks and relocated our family to Austin, Texas.  The first major expense that occurred shortly after we arrived was buying a car.  When I say “shortly” I mean that we had only been in the city for not even a few months.  My son was driving our old car.  He had an accident.  He walked away but the car went to car heaven.

Back then we were a one-car family and since the public transportation system in Austin was not all that good, we knew we needed to get a car and fast!  We could not afford a brand new car so we bought a used car.  The first thing that happened after we bought the used car was … it broke down!  Being brand new to the city we didn’t really know who to call.  I picked up a local publication, started browsing through it, and found the name of a guy who advertised that he fixed cars, 24/7 and that he came to you.  We were in a hotel.  He came to us to fix the car, in the parking lot!

I called the phone number in the advertisement and talked to the guy before he came over.  When I hung up the phone, I said to my late husband:  “That guy sounds awfully young.  Do you think we can trust him to fix the car?”  My husband replied:  “Aw!  Don’t worry!  He’s probably one of those guys who like to work on classic cars.”

Turns out the young guy was terrific when it came to fixing cars.  It also turns out that he was one of those guys who liked working on classic cars.  LOL.

That delightful experience is why I picked these delightful tweets about classic cars.

History and Fun Trivia About Barbie

I like vintage stuff and I like trivia.  A Barbie doll is a doll I always wanted for Christmas but for some reason my mom would never buy me one.  I did get a doll for the holiday.  But it was never a Barbie.  WHY??  WHY??? WHY???  My mom said she could not afford it.  I had several siblings so on her limited income, she had stretch her money to make sure we all got toys and that we had a good Christmas meal.  Once I grew up and realized the sacrifices she made to make up happy, I understood.  But as a child not getting the gift you want from Santa Mom is really kind of traumatizing.  You know what I mean??  LOL.

At any rate, did you know:

  • “Barbie dolls were invented by Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel, Inc., an American toy manufacturing company founded in 1945. After observing her daughter play with paper dolls, Handler was inspired to create a three-dimensional version of a career-minded, adult doll. She even bought the rights to the German-made doll Bild Lilli, and modeled her version after the figure. By 1959, the first Barbie doll made its official debut at the New York Toy Fair.”

The word used to describe a person who collects dolls is plangonologist.   Some collectible dolls  range in value from just $10 to an impressive $2,000.

There are all sorts of Barbie Collectibles.  From famous entertainers like a Barbie Lucile Ball; women in history like Susan B. Anthony and Helen Keller, female characters from fairy tales like Snow White and from popular fantasy, like Galadriel from Lord of Rings.  And of course there are collectible Barbie dolls to celebrate the anniversary of Barbie, when she was introduced to the world.

Vintage Books for Your Personal Library or Book Collections

No matter what anybody says I say that libraries will never go out of style.  Yes, there is and always will be digitized literature.  But nothing will ever replace resting comfortably in your bed or on your sofa and curling with a good book!  NOT a tablet!

That being said, I have always loved most things vintage. Have to define “vintage” in case you happen to be about the age of one of my kids. Vintage for them might be circa 1980 or 1990, and they may think vintage for me would be circa 1880 or 1890. Not so.

Vintage, by my definition, is back in my day, the 1950s and 60s, or anything before that but still in the 1900s.

Are we clear? Good!

One of my favorite things is “library trash”. Books that some public libraries toss like trash because they do not have enough room on their shelves and have to make space for the “new”.

In my dictionary: old books = vintage books; and they are still worth reading!

Of course, if it is left up to chance and you are searching for a specific book, the odds are not in your favor and you may be waiting a while – wishing and hoping for that particular reading material to end up on the pile. Not all awesome vintage books are tossed by the head librarian.

Fortunately, there is a bookstore called Vintage Books, that has been around since 1954. It is physically located in New York, New York, but thanks to the wonders of information technology, you can peruse their bookshelf online. There are books listed by the usual genres from Art to History to Mystery to Travel. But you might find the selected works categorized in the Vintage Series worth examining. There are 5 different series: Civil War; Classics; Contemporaries, Departures; and International.

Vintage books are priceless additions to your own personal library and are great gift ideas. What is also great is that these published works are not very expensive, come in paperback or hardcover, as well as audio-book format or in the Kindle edition.

(NOTE: Vintage Books is part of the Random House/Knopf Doubleday network of bookselling sites.  Below are book Selections From the Vintage Series

Old-Fashioned Family Fun: Throwback: Best Family-Friendly Card Game Ever!

Ever played the Gin Rummy 500 card game?

Do you ever do throwback? “Throwback Thursday is a popular internet trend used among social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.” (Wikipedia)

What is this trend? Lots of people participate in sharing a bit of nostalgia; memories of stuff they remember from back in their day. You can share any happy memory from your past that produces a vintage vibe. (“Vintage vibe”? Yeah. That’s how I describe it.)

Usually, people post those memories on a Thursday via their social media account and hashtag the content #ThrowbackThursday or #TBT. If I share on any day other than Thursday I just modify the hashtag for my social share as #throwback.

I'm sharing my throwback via this blog. It's a memory of a time when I used to enjoy old-fashioned family fun.  My siblings and I used to play cards.

* * *
I grew up in a medium to large size family: 7 boys, 2 girls.

(Some think that’s a large family. Others say if it’s less than 10 kids, it’s medium. Eh!)

With several kids, my mom found a way of maintaining harmony in the family by keeping us busy with puzzles, board games, and card games.

Smart mom! Right? Of course! Those activities don’t require electricity or batteries and can keep kids entertained for hours and hours and hours. Plus. Mom always knew where we were.

I have pleasant childhood memories.  We loved playing Gin Rummy 500.  Have you ever played?
