Flower Spotlight: Cape Primrose

One of the most amazing things about planet earth is its floral diversity. Some sources says there are 400,000 flowering plant species on earth. I have no official qualifications to sy this. I am not a botanist or anything like that. But only 400,000? That number sounds sounds kind of low. Whether it's an accurate count or not, we can agree that there are at lets a bazillion flowers on planet earth and that includes the hybrids. LOL.

This short post shines the spotlight on Cape Primrose.

Cape Primrose is a flower that has several species and is native to South Africa. One doesn't usually associate fairies with Africa but somehow people have associated these flowers with fairies. There is a whimsical belief that fairies care for them. What do they symbolize? Just about everything one would desire in this life. Perfect health. Good luck. A brand new start in life. Spiritual paths that lie ahead. Purity. Honesty. But most importantly, love.

FUN FACT: Cape Primrose is a cousin of African violet.

The Cape Primrose is an easy flowering houseplants that blooms in colors of shades of violet, pink, crimson, blue, violet and white.

What Did We Do to Make Sharks So Angry?

Growing up in Miami, Florida, going to the beach was common.  I can remember spending an entire day at the beach many times.  It was nothing but fun!  Being attacked by a shark never crossed my mind.  But times have changed.  Some people who go to the beach these days don't have the same memories that I have from my childhood and teenage years.

This was a really sad news report and it seems like I hear similar reports every 2 to 3 days some place in the world where there are beautiful beaches.  Talk about a vacation with a horrific memory! This family had just arrived in The Bahamas for a vacation and the woman was attacked and killed by a shark. They had only been in the country for a few hours.

Here's a quote from the article: "Bull sharks, which are known to be aggressive, can reach up to 11.5 feet and 600 pounds, National Geographic Kids reported. They live up to 16 years in the wild. They eat fish, turtles, dolphins and other sharks. Most attacks on humans occur when sharks mistake them for prey."

Mistake a human for prey?

  • The shark can't tell the difference between a human and a turtle or fish? (O.o)

I'm thinking we need to design diving suits in a way that the sharks don't mistake us for food!!

I'm not joking. I'm being dead serious about this!

I watched a movie where Angelina Jolie was swimming under water. When she encountered a shark, she punch it in the face. Yeah right! That's how we fend off a shark attack. I don't think so!

* * *

"According to the Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File, the U.S. has reported 1,563 unprovoked shark attacks since 1580 – the most of any country in the world ..."

Animals and Wildlife: Spotlight on the African Buffalo

I have never seen a buffalo.  Not even at a zoo.  For most of my entire life, I’ve only ever heard buffalo mentioned in 3 contexts.

Context 1:

Native Americans ate buffalo for food. But the white man killed the animals for sport, thus depleting the food supply for the Indians.

Context 2:

When crowds go insane and rush into a stadium or a Walmart, they are referred to as a “herd of stampeding buffaloes”.

Context 3:
There is an imaginary “purple buffalo” which is an integral part of the storyline for The Neverending Story.  Great family entertainment. I prefer the movie, but there is also an animated TV series.

Thanks to a fellow blogger from Botswana, a 4th context has been added to my knowledge base.

Context 4:

There are buffaloes in Africa and they are a part of Botswana’s Big Five.

Impressive beast!  Isn't it?

For Your Information: “They are well known for their high level of intelligence and intuition Apparently when a person tries to play dead, the buffalo will urinate into the canal of their ear because it causes intense itching, forcing them to snap out of it and give themselves up!”
Uh huh. Well! Now that I know this, I know to continue to play dead no matter how badly it itches!  :)
