What are Some Historic Events You Lived Through?

I am an old lady with a Tumblr account and I can tell the Tumblr community has a lot of young people. I stumbled across a post and the person was saying they were very upset about living through a historic event RIGHT NOW. It was a reference to our 2024 presidential elections.  (Visit my Tumblr.)  But then I thought to myself:  How many historic events have I lived through?

Let me think. I've lived through:

1. Introduction of new technology: Television (50s) and Internet (90s)
2. 3 assassinations – John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.
3. 3 POTUS Impeachments – Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump (impeached twice)
4. The passage of the Civil Rights Act
5. Neil Armstrong walked on the moon
6. Richard Speck - 1st serial killer or mass murderer I knew about
7. The Vietnam War and “Flower Power”
8. Iran-Contra Affair
9. Fall of the Berlin Wall
10. Oklahoma City Bombing
11. Sept 11th Attack
12. Death of Osama bin Laden and several other high-profile terrorists
13. COVID-19 Pandemic
14. January 6 Capitol Riot
15. Yom Kippur War in 1973 & 50 years later same conflict, same people, on Yom Kippur AGAIN!
16. Several Landmark Supreme Court Decisions from Roe v Wade to the overturning of Roe V Wade
17. MASS SHOOTINGS – 1960s at the University of Texas; 1980s at a McDonald's in California; 1990s at Luby's Cafeteria in Texas and at Columbine High School … It's 2024 and NOW there are so many mass shootings we maintain a database of the incidents

There are more. But these events are memorable.

Travel and Vacation: Explore the City Rome: Where to Go and What to See (Guest Post)

The Eternal City Rome is home to more than 3 million people and rises from the Lazio region of west central Italy. Cradled between the Apennines and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

According to legend, Rome was founded by twin brothers, Romulus and Remus, 700 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. And it was here, on Palatine Hill, that the foundations of the city were laid. A city that would soon become the Capital of the World.

Even today, the atmosphere of Roman times could be felt throughout the city.

Colosseum in Rome: symbol of ancient Rome

Surviving earthquakes and centuries of stone thieves, the magnificent Colosseum remains the most enduring symbol of Ancient Rome. The impressive structure is still in very good condition, you just need a little imagination to frame images of gladiators in battle. Over four centuries, tens of thousands of gladiators, slaves, and Christians died in a blaze of glory.

The Colosseum at night is pleasing to the eye, during the summer it is now possible to see the Colosseum at night on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Make sure to buy your Colosseum tickets in advance during the planning stage of your Rome vacation, otherwise you’ll have to queue for a long time.

Roman Forum

Beneath the birthplace of Rome is the Roman Forum - the Roman Forum filled with temples, monuments and markets. The Forum was the center of public life in Ancient Rome and the most famous meeting place in the world, and was the heart of the city. . When the Roman Empire fell in the fifth century, the forum was reduced to a meadow of cows; a mere orchard. But, the eight columns of the Temple of Saturn and the Arch of Septimius refused to crumble.

In the 17th century, young European travelers came to Rome in search of the roots of Western civilization. This hunger for the antiquities of Rome led to their preservation. And yet, travelers come from all over the world. The Roman Forum is very close to the Colosseum in Rome.

The Pantheon: the place to worship

On the nearby Arch of Constantine, an inscription bears the words, inspired by the divine. The Pantheon, one of the oldest Roman buildings, was a place to worship all the gods, from Juno, the god of fertility, to Mars, the god of war.

Pass under the central oculus of the dome and stand in the same divine light that has bathed emperors, gladiators, merchants, and travelers for nearly two millennia.

Toss the coin in the Trevi Fountain

Located in the center of the city hidden in the labyrinth of Small Street is the Trevi Fountain. No Roman holiday is complete without making a wish at the Trevi Fountain. Toss a coin in Trevi and one day you’ll be back in Rome (it can be another relaxing city break in Rome). Flip two coins and you will fall in love with a Roman. After flipping coins, you can relax on the steps with a scoop of ice cream, the city’s famous ice cream.

World’s largest church St. Peter’s Basilica

Rome may no longer be the capital of the world, but it has long been the center of Christianity. Today, modern pilgrims continue to cross the river, guided by the angel of the bridge as they make their way to one of the great squares of the world.

Piazza Saint Pietro, Saint Peter’s Square.

And here is the largest church in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica. Filled with masterpieces by Bernini, Giotto, Raphael, Saint Peter’s crowning glory is its dome, designed by the brightest star of the Renaissance, Michelangelo.

From the dome you can see the holy square where two colonnades extend like open arms to welcome the faithful who gather by the thousands to receive the blessings of the Pope. This Vatican City is the seat of the Catholic Church and the home of the Pope.

Piazza Navona is one of the great squares of Europe

Once a stadium, today Piazza Navona is one of the great squares in Europe. The crowds and thunderous carts have long faded replaced by a trio of fountains, baroque architecture, artists, and the aroma of Rome’s best coffee.

Traditional Roman cuisine near the Tiber river

As the sun sets over Rome, head to the island sanctuary of Isola Tiberina. Let the rushing water of the River Tiber soothe your senses and indulge in authentic Roman cuisine that has been perfected by generations of Italian grandmothers and great-grandmothers. This is just a highlight. Really tasting all of Rome’s treasures can take a lifetime. But Rome only needs a moment for you to fall in love with it, so be prepared.

Shopping in Rome

During your relaxing vacation in Rome, if you are planning or have already planned to do some shopping, you will find designer stores with all the famous brands such as Zara, Gucci, Prada, etc.

Questions and Answers About Classic Literature

I have a Tumblr blog. (I have several in fact.) But I don't get much feedback and interaction from my followers other than reblogs and likes, for which I am grateful. I'm not complaining.  However, every once in awhile I come across a really cool Q & A post and have to pluck it from the Tumblr stream to share with the general public. I love questions and answers and I love literature.  This post was reblogged from another blog so I have to mention both blogs to give proper credit.

Post title: Classic Novel Themed Asks
The blogger (a teenager named Kate) asks a series of questions (bold print) and my responses follow. I'll give her the link to this post so that she can have my answers. She may be working on a school assignment. IDK.  The post seems to have been reblogged many times.

* * *

Of Mice and Men - What drives/motivates you?

  • The title of the book makes me think that men can be such rats!  I am motivated to rise above the silly rat race.

The Phantom of the Opera - What song currently defines your life?

  • The theme song. But only if Sarah Brightman sings it.  What can I say?  I'm a huge fan of the lady and listening to her sing defines my life.

1984 - Spill a secret about yourself.

  • The secret is I got no secrets.  I would have to make one up but I don't have the energy to do it.

Pride and Prejudice - Got a crush?

  • No. But I like the way the story ended and I liked the Bollywood version/remake, "Bride and Prejudice".

The Scarlet Letter - What’s your favorite word and what does that word mean?

  • Scarlet. It means red.  Red is my favorite color and you must admit that if you mark somebody with it you can't help but see them!

To Kill a Mockingbird - What’s the last text message you sent and the last song you listened to?

  • I don't get text messages.  I don't have a mobile phone and I don't text people.  Whatever!  I'm an old lady.  I won't apologize because part of the tech world left me behind.  The last song I listened to was a love song in a Korean drama. I don't know the name of the song. The series was “Arang and the Magistrate”.  I love the South Korean actor Lee Joon-gi. I like his eyes. They're piercing.

Wuthering Heights - Define your personal aesthetic.

  • Those gloomy moors.
"The Moors - Moors play an important part in establishing the mood of the novel. ..." (REF: Wuthering Heights Symbolism: An Analysis of Symbolism in Wuthering Heights | brighthubeducation.com)

Fahrenheit 451 - What’s your favorite book?

  • "Shannah". It's a historical romance by the late Kathleen Woodiwiss.

Moby Dick - What’s your most important goal in life?

  • Die and go to heaven. “For what does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul.”

Jane Eyre - What’s a fictional character that you believe you are most like/you relate to most?

  • Annette Funicello (1942 - 2013). All the goodie two shoes girly characters she played in those beach movies with Frankie Avalon. LOL. Plus she was the most memorable Mouseketeer from the original Mickey Mouse Club. I imagined myself being in that club.
  • Shirley Temple (1928 - 2014).  Especially for her role as "The Little Princess".  I totally related.
(NOTE:  A little entertainment trivia.  Even though I admired Ms. Temple as an actress very much, I am glad she did NOT get the role as Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz".  Nobody could sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" like Judy Garland sang that song.)

The Catcher in the Rye - What does your name (first and/or middle) mean?
  • I don't know the meaning of my first or middle name. Tried to research but can't find them anywhere. My names are not in any language!

The Lord of the Flies - What’s your friend group like?

  • They're saints. No. For real. They're saints.

The Picture of Dorian Grey - Post a photo of yourself posing like your icon.

  • You don't want to see me, like an icon or otherwise. I won't even take a picture for the church directory.

Les Miserables - What do you do when you’re sad?

  • Official oppression makes me sad. Evil people in the government are far worse than gangsters. They have a get out of jail free card and they're always playing it.  They believe they will never be punished for their sins; so they do whatever they want to do to anybody.  What do I do?  I PRAY.  "Deliver us from evil."

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - What is one place that you’ve always wanted to go?

  • A beautiful tropical island like Polynesia. Inspired by watching the movie South Pacific.

Emma - What was your first kiss like?

  • It was disappointing. I thought I liked the guy but I didn't. His kiss was sloppy and I was inexperienced. It took me a long time to decide to kiss another guy. When I finally did, the second kiss was much better.

The Great Gatsby - Describe the most recent dream you can remember having.

In my most recent dream, 3 of my sons called me and said they needed me to come and pick them up right away. They were in trouble.  I set out to go and get them. Like an idiot, I realized that I was walking. I turned around to go back and get the car. My husband says he's going with me because he doesn't trust me. He thinks I just want to get out of the house.  Meaning that he doesn't believe that I'm going to get my sons … uuhh … HIS sons which are also my sons. He says he's coming with me. I'm like “I don't care! Let's go get them.”

We get to the place, at the back of a building, and some other people try to get in our car. We drive away quickly to the front of the building and we see our sons. We look behind and see some people. Chasing us? Chasing them (our sons)? We don't know. We yell to our sons: “GET IN THE CAR!” One of my sons managed to jump in but the other two are still trying to catch us in a moving vehicle so they can jump in too. I say to my husband “We can't leave them!” My son, who is already in the car says “But what about me?”  (It's something he used to always say when he was ca hild.)  I'm like (my blood boiling at this point): “You're already in the car!”

We stop the car for a moment. There is some other guy with his face to the wall, he turns around, slumps to the ground and starts crying. My husband says “What about him?” I'm like “HE AIN'T MY SON! His momma need to come and get him!” I turn and yell to my two boys who finally caught up to us, “GET IN THE CAR!” They jump in! They're in sideways like laying on top of the back seat. I don't care. I got all of them! I drive off and then … I wake up! I'm out of breath. I'm annoyed. I feel like I haven't any sleep at all!! I hate dreams like that. LOL.

My New Instagram Account ~ My Favorite Post

Creature of habit that I am, signed into my social media accounts as I do each day and a nice person had sent me an invitation to join Instagram.

Had tried on my own several times but was unsuccessful.

Perhaps an invitation was all that was needed.
Later I learned that I could have created an account all along with just me eMail address.
Live and Learn.

Movies : The Legend of Suram Fortress (1985)

An interesting foreign movie find.  Had to do a little research though.

"The Legend of Suram Fortress", Sergei Parajanov & Dodo Abashidze, 1985 film ~ “… based on a Caucasus Mountains legend that tells of the repeated efforts of the Georgian people to construct a fortress against invaders. …”

Info & Quote Source: http://www.moma.org/calendar/events/668

"The Caucasus Mountains (like the Ural Mountains to the northeast) are usually considered the dividing line between Asia and Europe, with the northern region of the Caucasus in Europe; and the southern (Trans-Caucasus) in Asia--so technically you can consider the mountains themselves as either part of Asia or part of Europe.  The region is divided between Russia, Turkey, Iran, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and bounded on the west by the Black Sea and on the east by the Caspian Sea. ..."

Kawaii Interior Inspiration | Glitter Puffs (Reblog)

A writer at Squidoo (a website acquired by HUBPages) introduced me to “kawaii”, which by my translation into plain English means “adorable cuteness”!  A more detailed explanation of the term, according to Artsy.net is as follows:
“The Japanese concept of kawaii—best translated as “cuteness”—has grown from a national trend to a global phenomenon. Sanrio’s Hello Kitty has been valued at $7 billion; the Oxford English Dictionary named an emoji its 2015 Word of the Year; and Nintendo’s Pokémon Go recently became the most downloaded game in smartphone history. The kawaii movement is wide in scope, spanning Manga comics, Harajuku fashion, and Takashi Murakami’s “Superflat” artworks, but what’s behind the aesthetic, and why is it so popular?”

Gottesman, Sarah. "The Art Genome Project : What Is Kawaii?" Artsy. N.p., 28 July 2016. Web. 02 Aug. 2017.

An amazing phenomenon!  Yes?  That's why I had to reblog the source link and share these adorably cute images published by a fellow blogger via her Blogspot blog who was looking for home decorating tips for a child's room.  (Also posted on my Tumblr blog.  Lots of kawaii lovers in the Tumblr community.)

Happy New Year From Weird Facts

I live in Austin, Texas and one of the city's advertising slogans is "Keep Austin Weird".  It's mainly to help promote small businesses.  Lived here since 1998 and maybe I'm just used to it, but the "weird" seems "normal" to me.

Anyway, this post isn't about Austin.  That was just a random side note inspired by the word "weird".  This post is about a cool Tumblr blog called Weird Facts (also called Mind Blowing Facts).  The archived posts date back to 2014.  In addition, they have over 200K followers and 1000 posts on Instagram.  Found this fact via their Instagram.  You may not think this fact is weird but now I wish I had never thrown away my old calendars.  Perhaps I'll start collecting calendars from 2018 forward.

Looking ahead to 2018.  How about you?  ☺
