Food and Drink: Real Soul Food Nourishes Your Body and Elevates Your Mind

There's the “soul food” associated with the mostly US-Southern-style cooking eaten by African-Americans ~ everything from collard greens cooked with smoked ham hocks and chitterlings to mac-n-cheese loaded with butter and cheese to sweet potato pie. The same food that now everybody tells us is the reason so many black folks have hypertension and diabetes.

Modern black Americans love the taste but let's face it ... it is not to die for!  Consequently, many of them are modifying "momma's recipes" and changing them to healthier versions to nourish the body and to comfort and uplift the body and the mind.

Then there is “soul food” as in chicken soup for the soul. That comforting bowl of soup that all wives and moms make no matter what the illness is, because if you just eat some chicken soup, you'll feel better.  It's the soup that inspired the book.  Experts say there is some truth of its positive impact on mind, body, and soul, albeit chicken soup is not a cure-all.

Then there's the soul food as described in this marvelous infographic. This is the best description of soul food ever!!  I especially like Steps 7, 11 and 16.  What about you?

Health : Note to Self : What Don't Make You Sexy Might Kill You!

What does Spanish Fly, chocolate, and Mandrakes have in common?  They are all associated with SEX!  What makes Spanish Fly different?  Uhh ... it might kill you!

  • The Venezuelan leader Simón Bolívar may have been accidentally poisoned by application of Spanish fly.[27]
  • Arthur Kendrick Ford was convicted and given a multiyear prison sentence in 1954 for the unintended deaths of two women surreptitiously given candies laced with cantharidin, which were intended to act as an aphrodisiac.[17]
aphrodisiac (n.)  "preparation or drug which excites sexual desire," 1719, from Latinized form of Greek aphrodisiakos "inducing sexual desire," from Aphrodisios, "sacred to Aphrodite, pertaining to Aphrodite," Greek goddess of love and beauty (see Aphrodite), whose name also meant "sexual pleasure; a temple of Aphrodite." As an adjective from 1775 (earlier was aphrodisical, 1719). Aphrodisian "devoted to sexual love" is attested from 1864.  (Source:  Online Etymology Dictionary)

Arts and Crafts: QUILLING

I am not very good with arts and crafts. I know how to sew and do a little crochet. But I have always admired people who could use their hands to create beautiful things. A friend introduced me to quilling, which she says is a popular art craft in India.

The way she explained it, quilling requires a lot of patience and can be a very relaxing activity. It's a great way to spend your time when you're bored! LOL. Truthfully? I was only interested in the craft because I saw that she had made a beautiful butterfly and I heart butterflies.

It looks like a fun art project you can do with kids. But I don't think I have the patience to do quilling. However, if you're interested, there are lots of tutorials on YouTube, like these:

Quilling Pink Butterfly Tutorial

On this YouTube channel, the video publisher makes all kinds of beautiful things: flowers, butterflies, etc.

* * *

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE HISTORY OF QUILLING:

“The name quilling is thought to come from the origin of the art; birds’ feathers, or quills, were used to coil the strips of paper around. The art of quilling has been around for centuries, with a remarkably varied historical background spanning across continents.” (Source:  Janet-Panic.com)

“Paper filigree, or quilling, dates back to at least the 15th century and flourished in France and Italy during the 17th and 18th centuries. Very little early quillwork has survived, and it is not known who first rolled thin strips of paper into different shapes to mimic, in a less expensive way, decorative metal filigree work. What is known is that monks and nuns from less well-endowed religious houses rolled paper strips to decorate Bible covers, reliquaries, and other objects of religious significance.” (Source: The Greenwood Hub: Paper Quilling Art

Quilling sounds like a delightful hobby and a great craft to teach to both adults and children.  Don't you think so?

P.S.   My university roommate taught me about decoupage.  Indeed, I do get buy with a help from my friends.☺

DNA is considered the blueprint of life. ...

Sharing a few thought after reading an excellent article published via USAToday.

After more than 20 years, scientists are finally done mapping the human genome, Approximately 8% of genetic material could not be deciphered with previous technology. That missing 8% was like a detective story with the pages missing that tell you who committed the crime. Why is this important? You could say that “Earlier maps, he said, were missing entire chapters of the book of life.”

“Mapping this genetic material should help explain how humans adapted to and survived infections and plagues, how our bodies clear toxins, how individuals respond differently to drugs, what makes the brain distinctly human and what makes each of us distinct from each other”, said Evan Eichler, a geneticist at the University of Washington School of Medicine who helped lead the research. Now, "we can continuously read the book with almost no errors," he said, "we can get from Page 1 to the final chapter."
RE: HEALTH AND MEDICINE: There is still a lot that is unknown, however, what is known about DNA mapping is used in medical care. The human genome is now routinely used in determining cancer treatment, reactions to certain drugs and identifying inherited genetic diseases.

RE: CRIME: DNA tests have revealed cases of “fertility fraud”. When a female patient went to receive artificial insemination, she was led to believe that it was the sperm of anonymous donor. Evidently, the doctor was donating his own sperm. How many patients did he did that to? I'm guessing the doctor knows OR he maybe he did it so many times he lost count. I'm not sure he has been found. The report I heard indicates he “could not be reached”. But this case opened up a “can of worms” and now several fertility doctors are being investigated.

Food and Drink: Herbs and Spices in the Bible

Studying the Bible, even if you are not seeking spiritual enlightenment, will always be educational and informative.  No matter which topic you are researching.  Helga Curtis wrote a book about fruits, herbs and spices in the Bible. Fifteen (15) plants were chosen because of their Biblical references. She is proficient in arts and crafts and teaches others her skills. In her book, she shares appliqué designs for fruits, herbs and spices such as chicory, cinnamon, cumin, mint, mandrakes, saffron, olives, figs, grapes, and more. Along with patterns, she also provides information about how the plants were used in Bible times.

Along with this book, I also found an excellent article at one of my favorite GO TO websites for general health information: Dr. Axe. No worries. It has a Medical Disclaimer that says the content is for information only and that you should seek professional medical advice if you're sick.  He also provides scriptural references for the herbs and spices.

Top 14 Herbs of the Bible that Heal & Nourish

1. Aloes

2. Anise

3. Balm or Balsam

4. Bitter herbs

5. Cassia

6. Cinnamon

7. Cumin

8. Frankincense

9. Garlic

10. Hyssop

11. Mint

12. Mustard

13. Myrrh

14. Saffron

The last spice, Saffron? No doubt you already know that saffron is the most expensive spice in the world.) But did you know that it was used to treat the Black Death (i.e. the Bubonic Plague)? Uh huh. Just goes to show you. When rich folks start dying and dropping like flies, if it comes to choosing between life and death, ain't nothing too expensive!!

NOTE: I am not a qualified historian. I'm just inserting my editorial comments, i.e. my opinions, observations, and a little bit of humor. Here is what an herbologist has to say about the use of saffron to treat the Bubonic Plague.

"For several centuries the cultivation of Crocus sativus was, for the most part, none-existent throughout Europe. This changed after the Moorish civilisation spread from North Africa around the 8th century and began reintroducing the spice. Saffron was rare, expensive and in high demand right up until the 14th century, when its use soared due to the medicinal applications of the plant in attempted treatments for the Black Death. However, many of the farmers that grew Crocus sativus had died from the disease and the demand far outstripped the supply. Thus large quantities of non-European saffron began to be heavily imported. The trade of saffron became of such significance that those found guilty of adulterating supplies were fined, imprisoned and even executed."  (Quote Source)

Psychology, the Zodiac and Dominant Personality Traits

Do you like quizzes? Like those personality quizzes geared at enlightening you as to the kind of person you really are.

I like taking those kinds of quizzes. Strictly for amusement. Not to explore myself inner self and learn new things about me, because having spent 6 decades on this planet, if I haven't figured out who I am by now, I might as well stop wasting time and put that “project” on the shelf. It's never going to get done!

Below are some fun links.

You can save the link and take the quiz later when you're bored and need a distraction.

I haven't gotten around to taking the quiz yet because:

(A) No fun time! I have been very busy with my work at home projects; and haven't had a minute to become bored. By the end of the day, I'm worn out and I watch something on TV or online, that requires no effort and will make me weary enough to wind down and fall asleep.

(B) Another reason is that the quiz is based on the Zodiac and if I'm being honest, I don't have any faith in the Zodiac. I'm supposed to a Sagittarius and even though this article found at another site ~ "7 Best Sagittarius Traits" ~ describes my personality traits to a "T" … I say that was just a lucky guess!

(C) According to Dr. Abraham Maslow (1908 – 1970), who was a psychologist: “Self-actualization, in psychology, is the process of understanding oneself and developing one's capacities and talents. It is the ability to realize fully one's potential.” (Quote source: Create Your Own Rainbow and Own It! ) I agree with Maslow on this point; and I am convinced that the position of the stars at the date and time of a person's birth can not prevent an individual from developing their own unique personality.

(D) Finally, I already know what my 6 dominant personality traits are: prayerful, patient, persistent, persevering, passionate, prayerful.

The “prayer” trait is repeated twice – at the beginning and at the end. A double portion of this trait is necessary to help me develop and maintain the other 4 traits.

How about you?
Do you know what your dominant personality traits are?

Food and Drink: Health and Coca Cola : Teaching the World to Lament and Repent

From music evolution to soda slamming? (O.o)

You may ask: How did I get there? Here's how.

No longer subscribe to cable or satellite TV and don't often tune in to the telly in the mornings. But my husband happened to be watching CBS This Morning and there was an interesting segment titled "CBS CHANGING TUNES".

It began with the moderator going through a series of songs that were all a part of my life's musical tapestry and of course, my head was nodding up and down in agreement with all of the selections – BeatlesEurythmics, Duran Duran, Bee Gees, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, etc.

But then they switched and said that a more exact method was going to be used to determine the music evolution in America.

What were the results of using this method?

Changing tunes in the USA still started with the Beatles ( i.e. the British Invasion ) but ended up with Hip Hop (Example: LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out.)

For those who disagreed with the research findings, this was the response: “This is science. Everything else before that was just opinion.”

Needless to say, I disagreed.
♦ ♦ ♦

But as if that wasn't bad enough, in an attempt to try to find that particular segment of the CBS morning TV show on the Internet to listen to it again, stumbled across the "CBS SODA SLAM" segment.

Commercial jingles were not included in the music research project mentioned in the previous paragraph. If they were, the Coca-Cola jingle – harmony hilltop song would certainly have been included. To lift a quote from this TV program segment, that tune is the “single most famous commercial ever produced”. So well-known that a health advocacy group chose to remake it and change the lyrics to promote healthy eating and drinking.

This is not opinion. It is fact that sugary soft drinks have had adverse health consequences, on a global scale.

Yet, my devotion and loyalty to Coca-Cola have never waned.

(Sigh.) Why couldn't the world have just enjoyed my favorite carbonated beverage in moderation?

Lament. Repent. Lament. Repent. Lament. Repent.

Anyway! Didn't find the video for the “Changing Tunes” segment on the Internet, but here's the link for the remake of the words for the iconic classic Coca-Cola commercial by the health advocacy group. (http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/health-group-remakes-iconic-coca-cola-jingle-to-take-on-soda)
