Food and Drink : I Don't Like Black Food (Unless it's Ice Cream)

“This blackened dessert trend is rippling across the world, and we want answers.”

I don't need answers. There's no fuss.  It's ice cream! That's all I need to know!

Food and Drink: Real Soul Food Nourishes Your Body and Elevates Your Mind

There's the “soul food” associated with the mostly US-Southern-style cooking eaten by African-Americans ~ everything from collard greens cooked with smoked ham hocks and chitterlings to mac-n-cheese loaded with butter and cheese to sweet potato pie. The same food that now everybody tells us is the reason so many black folks have hypertension and diabetes.

Modern black Americans love the taste but let's face it ... it is not to die for!  Consequently, many of them are modifying "momma's recipes" and changing them to healthier versions to nourish the body and to comfort and uplift the body and the mind.

Then there is “soul food” as in chicken soup for the soul. That comforting bowl of soup that all wives and moms make no matter what the illness is, because if you just eat some chicken soup, you'll feel better.  It's the soup that inspired the book.  Experts say there is some truth of its positive impact on mind, body, and soul, albeit chicken soup is not a cure-all.

Then there's the soul food as described in this marvelous infographic. This is the best description of soul food ever!!  I especially like Steps 7, 11 and 16.  What about you?

Food and Drink: It's October! Let's Celebrate Apples

In the USA, October is the month we celebrate Halloween, pizza, and apples. I especially like the fact that October is National Apple Month. It was founded as National Apple Week in 1904 and later expanded to the entire month of October. Apples are such a delightful fruit and come in numerous varieties. There is a variety for practically every letter of the alphabet, including the letter Z. The variety is called Zestar.

Apples in Legends, Myths and Folklore

Ever Hear of Johnny Appleseed?

From childhood, I have heard all kinds of stories about apples. The story I remember vividly is the one about Johnny Appleseed. As a child I remember hearing the story about a man who walked everywhere in America and everywhere he went, he dropped apple seeds on the ground and apple trees grew. That’s not really true. It is true that he was a real person and not a legend. His real name is John Chapman (1774 – 1845) who became known as Johnny Appleseed. He introduced apple trees to various parts of America such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. It’s not just the fact that he planted the trees which contributed to the environment. He was also a very kindhearted man and became known for his acts of charity, as well as his conservation efforts. It made him somewhat of a folk hero.

Other Legends and Myths About Apples

Is it in the Bible?

An apple is not mentioned in the Garden of Eden. Neither the Old or New Testament specifically state what the forbidden fruit was that Adam and Eve ate. However, for years people have insisted that it was an apple. Eating it caused them to be driven out of the Garden of Eden. An apple? Not sure why. (O.o)

Non-Biblical Myths

In Greek mythology, it was said that a golden apple is what caused the Trojan War. “The war originated from a quarrel between the goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, after Eris, the goddess of strife and discord, gave them a golden apple, sometimes known as the Apple of Discord, marked “for the fairest”.”

In Norse mythology, it was believed that apples held the key to immortality. The name of the Norse goddess who was the keeper of the apples was Iðunn. Her name means “ever young”.

The Celtic people buried apples with the dead. To the Celts the apple was sacred and it was associated with rebirth. Excavators have found graves dating back 5,000 years that had petrified apple slices.

In ancient Silesia (now modern-day Poland), people believed if they slept under an apple tree, it would induce dreams; and if a young woman put an apple under her pillow on New Year’s Eve, she would dream of her future husband.

How Do You Like Your Apples?

Apples can be eaten raw. Just pick them right off the tree. Bake them in pies, make cobblers, cookies, brownies, put them in salads, turn them into jelly, and more. My favorite way to enjoy apples? Warm apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. YUM! What about you?

My Medium Publications ~ The Year 2022 in Review

I began publishing content on Medium.com back in 2014, initially because this platform accepted republished content. But as my following grew I began to publish both original and republished content; and also created Medium publications. The publications give your content more exposure and are ret to meeting and collaborating with fellow writers. To day I am publishing 3 different publications: one fore general discussion topics, one for foodies, and one for sageuk lovers. (Sageuk movies and TV series are Korean historical period dramas.) Below are the links to articles that recap activity for the year 2022.

Express Yourself! ~ Most Viewed Articles at the End of 2022

There are 10 articles listed. My favorite article on this list is the one about King David and Bathsheba.

My Foodie Luv ~ Top 5 Stories for the Year 2022

A varied selection of topics: fruits, cakes, world cuisine/food history, and cooking terms explained for newbies in the kitchen.

My Sageuk Addiction ~ Top 10 Stories for 2022

I am very much enjoying streaming historical period Korean dramas. Viki, Netflix, Tubi, and YouTube have quite a slection to choose from. One tip if you plan to watch K-dramas: make sure that all of the episodes are available. It is so frustrating to get wrapped up in a series only to realize that you may have to wait several weeks until all of the episodes have been uploaded and are fully translated with English subtitles.

FINAL NOTE:

If you are also a Medium contributor OR you plan to become one and you are interested in sharing your content via my Medium publications, simply comment at this post OR at one of the Medium articles OR contact me via Twitter (@cmoneyspinner).

That’s it for 2022. It’s 2023. Wishing you a happy, healthy and prosperous new year!

Holidays and Celebrations: Do You Celebrate Japanese New Year?

The beauty of the United States of America is in its diversity.  People of different ethic groups and/or nationalities celebrate holidays and traditions that other groups are not even aware of.  But it's cool when I find out about them.  For example, I had a lot of Chinese friends so I learned to check every year to determine when Chinese New Year would occur.  My Japanese friends never mentioned their new year celebration.  But now I think I know why.

  • The Japanese New Year (正月, Shōgatsu) is an annual festival with its own customs. Since 1873, the official Japanese New Year has been celebrated according to the Gregorian calendar, on January 1 of each year, New Year's Day (元日, Ganjitsu). However, some traditional events of the Japanese New Year are partially celebrated on the first day of the year on the modern Tenpō calendar, the last official lunisolar calendar which was used until 1872 in Japan.  (Source:  Wikipedia)

It's January 1st, same day as America's New Year.  However, the traditions are different.  In case you didn't know, Japanese New Year is the most important holiday in Japan.  Did you know the kadomatsu (image below) is a traditional decoration for the new year holiday?

Other customs and traditions include bell-ringing in the Buddhist temples on New Year's Eve, sending postcards (just like sending Christmas cards), children receiving gifts of money from adults, and various forms of entertainment and of course ... great food!!

I subscribe to a newsletter called "Just One Cookbook". The publisher shares easy Japanese recipes. In the newsletter I received for the week ending December 4, 2020, she shared lots of information in order for you to prepare for Japanese New Year!

Health and Honey

Health and Honey.  As I am not a qualified medical professional, this post will be short and sweet.  Just sharing general health information I discovered that is beneficial to me.  Perhaps you will benefit from it also.

Most people know you can stay healthy with honey. Most people may or may not know that all honey is not the same. I didn’t know it. Then I learned about manuka honey. It's from New Zealand. It's so good they use it in hospitals as a skin healing treatment for burn patients. That's amazing! Manuka honey is like olive oil. Be careful! Some products are not genuine and are not what they claim to be.

***NOTE: You can also use manuka honey for cooking.

Food and Drink: Herbs and Spices in the Bible

Studying the Bible, even if you are not seeking spiritual enlightenment, will always be educational and informative.  No matter which topic you are researching.  Helga Curtis wrote a book about fruits, herbs and spices in the Bible. Fifteen (15) plants were chosen because of their Biblical references. She is proficient in arts and crafts and teaches others her skills. In her book, she shares appliqué designs for fruits, herbs and spices such as chicory, cinnamon, cumin, mint, mandrakes, saffron, olives, figs, grapes, and more. Along with patterns, she also provides information about how the plants were used in Bible times.

Along with this book, I also found an excellent article at one of my favorite GO TO websites for general health information: Dr. Axe. No worries. It has a Medical Disclaimer that says the content is for information only and that you should seek professional medical advice if you're sick.  He also provides scriptural references for the herbs and spices.

Top 14 Herbs of the Bible that Heal & Nourish

1. Aloes

2. Anise

3. Balm or Balsam

4. Bitter herbs

5. Cassia

6. Cinnamon

7. Cumin

8. Frankincense

9. Garlic

10. Hyssop

11. Mint

12. Mustard

13. Myrrh

14. Saffron

The last spice, Saffron? No doubt you already know that saffron is the most expensive spice in the world.) But did you know that it was used to treat the Black Death (i.e. the Bubonic Plague)? Uh huh. Just goes to show you. When rich folks start dying and dropping like flies, if it comes to choosing between life and death, ain't nothing too expensive!!

NOTE: I am not a qualified historian. I'm just inserting my editorial comments, i.e. my opinions, observations, and a little bit of humor. Here is what an herbologist has to say about the use of saffron to treat the Bubonic Plague.

"For several centuries the cultivation of Crocus sativus was, for the most part, none-existent throughout Europe. This changed after the Moorish civilisation spread from North Africa around the 8th century and began reintroducing the spice. Saffron was rare, expensive and in high demand right up until the 14th century, when its use soared due to the medicinal applications of the plant in attempted treatments for the Black Death. However, many of the farmers that grew Crocus sativus had died from the disease and the demand far outstripped the supply. Thus large quantities of non-European saffron began to be heavily imported. The trade of saffron became of such significance that those found guilty of adulterating supplies were fined, imprisoned and even executed."  (Quote Source)

Food and Drink: Health and Coca Cola : Teaching the World to Lament and Repent

From music evolution to soda slamming? (O.o)

You may ask: How did I get there? Here's how.

No longer subscribe to cable or satellite TV and don't often tune in to the telly in the mornings. But my husband happened to be watching CBS This Morning and there was an interesting segment titled "CBS CHANGING TUNES".

It began with the moderator going through a series of songs that were all a part of my life's musical tapestry and of course, my head was nodding up and down in agreement with all of the selections – BeatlesEurythmics, Duran Duran, Bee Gees, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, etc.

But then they switched and said that a more exact method was going to be used to determine the music evolution in America.

What were the results of using this method?

Changing tunes in the USA still started with the Beatles ( i.e. the British Invasion ) but ended up with Hip Hop (Example: LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out.)

For those who disagreed with the research findings, this was the response: “This is science. Everything else before that was just opinion.”

Needless to say, I disagreed.
♦ ♦ ♦

But as if that wasn't bad enough, in an attempt to try to find that particular segment of the CBS morning TV show on the Internet to listen to it again, stumbled across the "CBS SODA SLAM" segment.

Commercial jingles were not included in the music research project mentioned in the previous paragraph. If they were, the Coca-Cola jingle – harmony hilltop song would certainly have been included. To lift a quote from this TV program segment, that tune is the “single most famous commercial ever produced”. So well-known that a health advocacy group chose to remake it and change the lyrics to promote healthy eating and drinking.

This is not opinion. It is fact that sugary soft drinks have had adverse health consequences, on a global scale.

Yet, my devotion and loyalty to Coca-Cola have never waned.

(Sigh.) Why couldn't the world have just enjoyed my favorite carbonated beverage in moderation?

Lament. Repent. Lament. Repent. Lament. Repent.

Anyway! Didn't find the video for the “Changing Tunes” segment on the Internet, but here's the link for the remake of the words for the iconic classic Coca-Cola commercial by the health advocacy group. (http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/health-group-remakes-iconic-coca-cola-jingle-to-take-on-soda)

We Heart It : My Year in Hearts ~ 2017

Joined We Heart It during 2017. Started 8 Collections (listed below) and ended the year with 86 Followers. The 8th collection is just a grouping of my most popular hearted images during 2017; i.e. images I shared that other people liked.  I have enjoyed using the social media platform and plan to use it more during 2018.

During the year WHI made a significant change and allowed people to start writing articles.  Before this change, it was strictly an image-sharing site.  I embraced the change by publishing one article.  I Heart Korean Dramas and Art (It's My Obsession!)  It wasn't too bad for a first try.  I may do more articles and take advantage of this free writing platform.  I haven't decided yet.  For now, I am loving sharing images that I .
