The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault (Reblog)

Reblogging this post from a wonderful blog which is published by an art teacher. If you are an art lover you could spend hours at this blog.  She posts about the works of Van Gogh, Degas, and many other artists.  She shares fascinating history and information about various paintings like this one:

"The Raft of the Medusa, created in 1818-19 and exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1819, is a huge painting in the Romantic style by Gérica...This painting, which is a self-promotional piece Géricault created to advertise his skills as a painter of large-scale commissions, is based on an actual event in French naval history. The frigate Medusa ran aground on the coast of Mauritania, in Africa, in July of 1816. ... this is another example of Géricault's mastery of composition and of creating a dynamic and powerful narrative with painting. It is hard to imagine that he was only 27 years old when he finished it, and sad to know that he lived only a few years more, dying in 1824. One can only imagine all the further masterpieces he might have created!"

Art Blog: 03 Works, The Art of War, Edward Bird's The Day ... (Reblog)

I don't often reblog. But due to "our present distress" ~ I'm referring to the Israel-Hamas and Russia-Ukraine conflicts ~ even though I am living in America, far away from the daily lives of people experiencing the harsh reality of war, this painting moved my heart and soul.
Here is the saddest thing about this painting.  Quoting from the blog post.  "The painting is based on an English ballad and tells the story of a hunting party led by Percy, Earl of Northumberland. Inadvertently they crossed the English-Scottish border and the Earl of Douglas thought it was an invasion."

4 Black Lives Who Made Sure What They Did Mattered...

Speaking as an American, it is my opinion and firm belief that America may not be a perfect nation but it is a great nation. These 3 African-American citizens ~ Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and Martin Luther King Jr. ~ believed in the United States of America and contributed to making it the nation that it is today.

Reading List : Sultana: Two Sisters by Lisa J. Yarde (Reblog)

I simply must introduce you to the exquisite blog that recommends books that focus on women in history; not just in Western culture but around the world. This blog not only has value because of the truly excellent book reviews shared by the publisher but because it is, without a doubt, one of the most stunning and visually appealing blogs ever published about women.

Sultana: Two Sisters

This book is the story of two women, set in the 14th Century Nasrid Dynasty (Spain), vying for the heart of one man, a Moorish Sultan. One woman is a Jewess.  The other wants to hide her heritage.  A lover's triangle may be an old plot, but this tale of romance written by Lisa J. Yarde is sure to captivate the reader.

"How brave and elegant the Nasrids were is debatable – seven of the first nine of the sultans were assassinated – but the romantic reputation endures."  Quote Source:   Versions of Andalusia | theglobeandmail.com

NOTE:  The Sultana Series is a collection of 6 books.  To view the titles in this series and more books by Lisa J. Yarde, visit the Author's Amazon Page.

March is Women's History Month and National Reading Month.

Daily Favor: Undercover Angel (Reblog)

Reblogging from "Fay". A lovely lady who describes herself as an: Inspirational Christian Author, Writer, Teacher, Encourager, Blogger, Wife. (@Favored1)

“God must have needed another angel” is a common saying when someone leaves this world.

Even though all the angels were created before the foundations of the earth, somehow it brings people comfort thinking their loved one is in the company of this heavenly host. ...

Con't reading ...

JDV Comments:

When we experience the death of a loved one, there is a great temptation to believe that they have become angels and are now in heaven watching over us. But there are no scriptures that teach or tell us this. It's just a comforting thought to hold on and help us through our grief. I do believe in angels. But the key takeway from the scriptures is that whenever humans have had encounters with angels, we lowly creatures were told BY the angels NOT to worship them.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: The angels have their purpose in the creation. But that purpose was never to save our souls. Only God can offer salvation. And He did. John 3:16

Blessings to all those who read this.

Amen!

Plant Profile: Eucalyptus | Crooked Bear Creek Organic Herbs (Reblog)

Although the eucalyptus tree is indigenous to Australia, it has been successfully cultivated in several other countries. It grows fast and it grows big and tall. Some can grow up to two hundred fifty feet. This tree's eco-friendly environmental benefits and proven medicinal uses are phenomenal.

In Guatemala, the trees were planted to “complete reclamation of water bogged malarial swamps”.

It has many herbal remedies and its commercial use is well known as it is a key ingredient in an over-the-counter product that has been around more than half a century. Vicks Vapo Rub. Oh yes! How could we breathe without it?

More fun facts about this tree?

  • Also known as “Tasmania blue gum” and a sub-species is known as “Maiden’s gum”.

  • It is “a popular tree for cultivation and reforestation efforts”. The tree can adapt to local conditions wherever it is planted in just a few generations.

  • Australian aborigines traditionally used various herbal remedies made from different parts of the Eucalyptus to treat fevers and all kinds of infections.”

  • Eucalyptus is an essential oil and can be used internally and externally.

This post was first published in June 2017 and then updated for July 2020.  It's basically a discussion with myself that answers the question:  Who is "We"?  Although how could we not know the answer.  We are the World.

Artists I Fancy: The Art of The Munsters : Arnold Kohn (Reblog)

Saw this fun piece of artwork and wanted to credit the original artist. Thank goodness for that Google “Search by Image” tool.  Found this at another Blogspot blog and reblogged it.

Frankensteinia: The Frankenstein Blog: The Art of The Munsters : Arnold Kohn (Reblog)

“The Munsters” used to be one of my favorite comedy TV shows. Imagine. A TV series where there are lovable monsters who live right next door and are great neighbors! Who thought of that?? :) This blogger's archived posts date back to 2007. If you're in the mood for Halloween you might want to stop by.

"Artist Kohn established himself in the late Forties with his dynamic pulp covers, fronting such titles as the venerable Amazing Stories. ...The piece was used as a cover for a Whitman “Authorized TV Adventure” book called The Munsters and the Great Camera Caper, written by William Johnson ."

Magazines That Pay for Travel Writers (and Other Paid Writing Work)

Some of my fellow bloggers have a passion to write about their wanderlust.  Reblogging this list provided by Erica Verrillo, publisher of Publishing ... and Other Forms of Insanity.

Idea? 💡

  • Perhaps you can turn some of your memorable travel photographs into works of art and resell them as art. It's a thought.

If you are not a travel writer, do not despair.  Here are links to other income-earning writing opportunities.  Perhaps there is one for you (and me).

15 Magazines That Pay $500 or More

While most literary journals generally offer modest compensation (if any), there are some magazines that pay generous professional rates. Many of these specialize in niche markets, which means they have a loyal readership. If you happen to have the expertise or a background that would appeal to their audiences, these magazines will be happy to read your pitch.

Talented Photographers : Nigerian Girl, 5, Dubbed the 'Most Beautiful in the World' | PEOPLE.com (Reblog)

Finally! Another addition to my “Talented Photographers” post series. Found a great post to share if you having a boring day and want to enjoy some beauty. There is a little bit of a brew ha ha going on at the photographer's Instagram account because the child was posed and dressed sort of like an adult (hair and makeup, etc.).  But just bypass all that and take a look at this lovely photograph. Isn't this child gorgeous?  No doubt this talented photographer was thrilled to work with this child model. Her name is Jare Ijalana and the photographer is Mofe Bamuyiwa.

Albino Children : Innocence Versus Ignorance

At the age of about 8 or 9 years old, I saw a young boy who was "white everywhere"! His skin, his hair, his eyebrows! Asked my mother about him and she casually remarked: "He's an albino". That was the entire discussion. I accepted her answer and moved on. Fast forward.

BLACKS WITH BLUE EYES: NATURAL PHENOMENON OR GENETIC MUTATION??

It is generally believed that black people do not possess blue eyes. The blue eyes has always been associated with the Caucasians (whites). In many scientific studies and a more recent one conducted by the Copenhagen University the genetic mystery of "blue eyes" is said to have originated from the northeast coast of the Black Sea.

Kawaii Interior Inspiration | Glitter Puffs (Reblog)

A writer at Squidoo (a website acquired by HUBPages) introduced me to “kawaii”, which by my translation into plain English means “adorable cuteness”!  A more detailed explanation of the term, according to Artsy.net is as follows:
“The Japanese concept of kawaii—best translated as “cuteness”—has grown from a national trend to a global phenomenon. Sanrio’s Hello Kitty has been valued at $7 billion; the Oxford English Dictionary named an emoji its 2015 Word of the Year; and Nintendo’s Pokémon Go recently became the most downloaded game in smartphone history. The kawaii movement is wide in scope, spanning Manga comics, Harajuku fashion, and Takashi Murakami’s “Superflat” artworks, but what’s behind the aesthetic, and why is it so popular?”

An amazing phenomenon!  Yes?  That's why I had to reblog the source link and share these adorably cute images published by a fellow blogger via her Blogspot blog who was looking for home decorating tips for a child's room.  (Also posted on my Tumblr blog.  Lots of kawaii lovers in the Tumblr community.)

Suffering Sappho! This 'Wonder Women' Fan Art Is Breaking The Internet (Reblog)

My kids are always raving and telling me about how cool fan art is and how it is the best compliment ever and shows appreciation and adoration.  Per Wikipedia:  "Fan art is artwork created by fans of a work of fiction and derived from a series character or other aspect of that work."

This fan art is so fantastic it has me speechless. All I can do is point you to the person who deserves all the credit!

"As the hit DCEU movie Wonder Woman was in its fourth day of breaking the US box office this past weekend, Atlanta-based illustrator Marcus Williams (Tuskegee Heirs) started breaking the internet — or Facebook and Twitter, at least — by posting a spine-tingling tribute to Wonder Woman and her largely forgotten fraternal twin sister, Nubia. ..."

Publishing ... and Other Forms of Insanity: 13 Paying Markets for Flash Fiction (Reblog)

Constantly keeping my eye open for writing opportunities since many of my online friends are also pursuing freelance writing, I pass along my findings. These writing opportunities look fantastic and they pay!

"In this age of short attention spans, flash fiction is becoming increasingly popular. Literary magazines which previously only considered short stories of at least 3,000 words are now calling for fiction short enough to be considered 'flash fiction.'"
