Infinite Culture: On The Link Between African And Irish Music

Love history. Love music. Love studying about “fusion”. All of our cultures are nothing but peoples mixed together. Just started following this blog, and this post discusses “the evolution of musical forms” with regard to the fusion of Irish and African influences. For me, this one statement summarizes how it happened:

"Travel and trade was alive and well, and the exchange of music had to have been part of the process."

Of course ... that could be wrong. But anyway ... sounds logical.

Ancient History : People and Places : Seven Wonders Plus One (or Two)

My late sister was an avid reader. She read anything and everything – books, newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias, dictionaries. My appreciation for the joys of reading did not come until my university years. My sister's brain was a repository of all kinds of information. Why read? Just ask her your questions. :) She was the one who taught me about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. To this day, every time there is a mention of these “Wonders”, it opens up a floodgate of memories.
Found an article at Info Barrel and would you believe it? Nothing has changed. Yep. The pyramids, the Hanging Gardens, a statue of Zeus, etc.All seven of them are still holding their historical ground as the "Seven Wonders", marvels and monuments to man's ingenuity, intelligence, and skill.  Structures actually built without a CAD program.  (CAD = Computer Aided Design)

Here's something my sister did not teach me but it has always been a wonder to me; two wonders if you count each person separately.

Two of the most influential people in the history of mankind. One of them, you can't find their grave or burial place. The other, there's a tomb but no body. Moses and Jesus.

You would think, what with them being prophets and notable leaders on a Divine mission, that they would have left some sort of indisputable undeniable physical trace of their existence on earth. Like maybe ... a bone fragment for DNA testing.
Not trying to be blasphemous, irreverent, or disrespectful. Don't want to offend any true believers out there. Let the record show I'm a true believer. OK? But it does make me wonder.  (O.o)

That was the only impressive line in that TV series.  It was a very disappointing television show.  "... this production has got to be the most historically inaccurate, unbiblical presentation of a Bible story ever made!!"  (I'm quoting myself.)

What are Some Historic Events You Lived Through?

I am an old lady with a Tumblr account and I can tell the Tumblr community has a lot of young people. I stumbled across a post and the person was saying they were very upset about living through a historic event RIGHT NOW. It was a reference to our 2024 presidential elections.  (Visit my Tumblr.)  But then I thought to myself:  How many historic events have I lived through?

Let me think. I've lived through:

1. Introduction of new technology: Television (50s) and Internet (90s)
2. 3 assassinations – John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.
3. 3 POTUS Impeachments – Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump (impeached twice)
4. The passage of the Civil Rights Act
5. Neil Armstrong walked on the moon
6. Richard Speck - 1st serial killer or mass murderer I knew about
7. The Vietnam War and “Flower Power”
8. Iran-Contra Affair
9. Fall of the Berlin Wall
10. Oklahoma City Bombing
11. Sept 11th Attack
12. Death of Osama bin Laden and several other high-profile terrorists
13. COVID-19 Pandemic
14. January 6 Capitol Riot
15. Yom Kippur War in 1973 & 50 years later same conflict, same people, on Yom Kippur AGAIN!
16. Several Landmark Supreme Court Decisions from Roe v Wade to the overturning of Roe V Wade
17. MASS SHOOTINGS – 1960s at the University of Texas; 1980s at a McDonald's in California; 1990s at Luby's Cafeteria in Texas and at Columbine High School … It's 2024 and NOW there are so many mass shootings we maintain a database of the incidents

There are more. But these events are memorable.

Thoughts About Russia as The Enemy and the Possibility of World War 3 (An American's Perspective)

Another excellent read. Prateek Dasgupta published an article via Medium.com titled "Why Asia and Africa Will Ensure That There Is No World War III". After reading I left a few comments. My thoughts shared at the article are also published below. I would like to share my comments with my JDV blog visitors, who don't visit the Medium platform.  Article excerpt that I highlighted:

“There will be no World War without two of the world’s largest continents.”

map of Russia

My Comments:

Yes we know Russia is not seen as The Enemy by Asia or Africa.

But there's still Australia, South America, Europe, and North America.

These are AI-generated answers. (The parenthetical notes are my interpretation.)

AUSTRALIA: “While Russia and Australia are not outright enemies, their relationship is characterized by significant tension and limited cooperation, especially in the current geopolitical climate.” (That means, we don't really want to fight. So don't piss us off! If war breaks out we don't have to take your side, you know?)

SOUTH AMERICA: “Russia is not considered an outright enemy by South American countries, but rather a strategic partner for some and a geopolitical player for others. The relationship is characterized by a mix of cooperation in certain areas and competition with U.S. influence in the region.” (That means it's all about our economy and who can offer better financial opportunity and growth.)

EUROPE: “In the current geopolitical climate, Russia is largely viewed as an adversary by most European nations.” (Can you spell enemy? Yes. R-U-S-S-I-A.)

NORTH AMERICA: “Overall, Russia is viewed more as an adversary than an ally by both the United States and Canada. The relationship is characterized by significant tension and competition, but there are still areas where cooperation is possible and necessary.” (Can you spell enemy? Yes. R-U-S-S-I-A. But you know … it don't gotta be that way. But y'all keep pushing in that direction! It's NOT US!! It's YOU! Clearly … it's YOU!!)

My additional thoughts?

The Bible says “The ways of the nations are in the Hands of God.” Frankly, I just believe it's God's way of keeping a “balance of power” between all nations. That way none of the nations will get too cocky and try to rule the world. Cause we all know what happened when crazy conceited clowns decided they wanted to build their EMPIRES. Hopefully, we learn lessons from history.

P.S. “Casualties of war” have always been unimportant no matter who is fighting who. That's why they came up with the phrase “casualties of war”. It's a euphemism for: “YEAH A BUNCH OF INNOCENT PEOPLE WILL BE KILLED. BUT SO WHAT! IT'S WAR!!” Then they point fingers of blame and say: “They started it!”

WAR!  What is it good for?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

SAY IT AGAIN!!

NO MORE WORLD WARS? Let's hope not.

Most people are hoping that nuclear weapons will keep everybody in check. So far we only know of nine (9) countries currently have nuclear weapons: Russia, United States, China, France, United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Israel, and North Korea. No countries in Australia or South America? Who knows? Maybe they have them, but it's a secret!

Did Sister Maria Talk in Code or Speak for the Devil?

In 1676 A.D., a nun, Sister Maria,  who claims she was “possessed” wrote a message she claimed came from The Devil. However, nobody could read it because it was written in cryptic symbols that nobody knew how to translate. 340 years later, in 2017, a team of computer scientists based at the LUDUM Science Center in Catania, Italy, managed to unravel the mystery. They used a decryption program which they found on the dark web.

*** “The scientists thought Sister Maria had perhaps created the code using a blend of existing alphabets. And thanks to her years of exposure to religious scripture, the nun had been a skilled linguist with knowledge of both ancient and modern languages. So it was that the experts’ theory proved to be right.”

A lot of it was just incoherent babbling. But some of the sentences formed specific thoughts. Evidently, IF she had written or spoken those words in plain language, she would have been accused of heresy and quite possibly burned at the stake. Now that they know what the letter said, using an understanding of modern psychiatric medicine, mental health professionals have written Sister Maria off as a schizophrenic. It wasn't The Devil's handwriting, it was her own.

REFERENCE: “In 1676 A Possessed Nun Wrote A Message From The Devil. Now The Spooky Letter Has Been Translated | Scientific Mirror” By Richard Arghiris, Nov 16 2021 ~ https://web.archive.org/web/20220219182310/https://scientificmirror.com/s/1676-possessed-nun-message-devil-letter-translated?as=799&bdk=0

This article is fascinating reading. For some reason, after finishing the detailed account of Sister Maria, the article writer decided that, for contrast and comparison, the story of Saint Bernadette, a teenage girl who claims to have had visions of the “Immaculate Conception”, Mary, the mother of Jesus, should be told as the conclusion of the matter. He seemed to think that Bernadette's story was much more intriguing than that of Sister Maria.

North and South Korea ~ Will It Ever Be Just Plain Old Korea?

Why it looks like reunification of North and South Korea will always be a pleasant fiction.

I am an America and these are my thoughts and observations from a distance. It's not meant to be offensive or insulting It's an opinion based on all of the Korean dramas I have watched about reuniting North and South Korea. But based on my limited understanding of world history and world politics, I would say that reunification is just a wish, and the Doggaebi will not grant this wish no matter how good you are.

Please. This just my opinion. I think the biggest reason why North and South Korea will never be united is because the political leaders in North Korea would have to admit THEY WERE WRONG. They chose the wrong side during war and even though the name of the country is The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the nation is neither a democracy or a republic.

Democracy is a system of government in which state power is vested in the people or the general population of a state. (Wikipedia)

A republic, based on the Latin phrase res publica, is a state in which political power rests with the public through their representatives—in contrast to a monarchy. Representation in a republic may or may not be freely elected by the general citizenry. (Wikipedia)

From my distance, it looks like even the name of the country is a lie?

The “D” should stand for dictatorship

The “R” should stand for royal bloodline.

(Just because you don't call yourself doesn't you're not a king.)

The “P” doesn't even belong! (O.o)

Why not name the country “Kim's Playground”. That's what the “P” should stand for. The current leader loves to play with nukes and invite naughty children to play with him, like Russia.

Think about this. During the COVID pandemic, Kim Jong Un had disappeared from the scene for a little while. During that time was there any discussion about electing a new leader? NO!! Instead, some were speculating whether or not his sister should or might take over. Sister or brother? No matter. It's still the Kim family line. At any rate, he showed up again so all that talk went down the drain.

Anyway! The real reason WHY North and South Korea will never reunite is because … CHINA WON'T LET THEM!! Nothing has changed. Just like the Joseon kings who submitted to the Chinese emperors, the North Korean leader is under the thumb of the Chinese leader. He doesn't make any major decisions without Cihna's approval.

All that being said, there are lots of Korean dramas with a storyline that involve North and South Korea. Some are based on historical facts, but the ones depicting reunification are unrealistic but very imaginative. (My opinion.)

  1. Commitment (2013)

  2. Curtain Call (2022)

  3. Doctor Stranger (2014)

  4. Escape From Mogadishu (2021)

  5. Hunt (2022)

  6. Korean Peninsula (2012)

  7. My Military Valentine (2024)

  8. Operation Chromite (2016)

  9. Secretly, Greatly (2013)

  10. Snowdrop (2021)

  11. Steel Rain (2017) and Steel Rain 2: Summit (2020)

  13. The Berlin File (2013)

What a Horrible Way to Go! : History of Ancient Rome : Executions

There was once a time when things were happening in my life that were overwhelming. There was one thought that kept me going and gave me the fortitude to find my inner strength and rise up to face each day:
“Eh! A lot worse things could be happening. But I'm not going to share those 'things that could be' because I don't want to give anybody any ideas.”
Someone asked a question on Quora which is a question and answer intelligence community. They wanted a description of “the most brutal death”.  Several contributed responses. But after reading the first response, I couldn't read any more.  I did not want to know.

Have you ever heard of the Brazen Bull?

(Look at the image below and use your imagination.)

Invented in ancient Greece.

The person who invented it was killed in it!

See what I mean? Had the inventor kept his thoughts to himself, he might not have died that way.
I'm surprised the Romans didn't copy it. They copied almost everything else from the Greeks. Never heard of this device being used in Roman history. Have you? Crucifixion must have been easier and cheaper. Instead of burning the wood, they could re-use the crosses. When it came to executions (since there were evidently so many to perform), the Roman governors were probably just thinking economically and employing fiscally responsible measures.  👀
Interesting.  (Shocking!)

History: People and Places: Mighty Female Warriors From Around the World

There are stories of women who are written into world history as mighty female warriors. But were they really?

The stories of these women are written into world history books and other publications as mighty female warriors. According to the historical accounts they were … a lot of “F” words. Fierce! Fearsome! Fighters! And??? Dare I say it? I dare. They were … Feminine.

Oh yes! Just because they could handle a weapon just as well or perhaps better than their male counterparts and boldly engage the enemy in a battle to the death, none of those from the opposite sex would ever say that they were not 100% woman. Indeed. Men would probably exclaim to each other: “What a woman!”

If you research the topic of women warriors you will find 7 listed in the Encyclopedia Brittanica.

  1. Boudicca
  2. Joan of Arc
  3. Cleopatra
  4. Penthesilea ( an Amazon queen in Greek mythology)
  5. Susan B. Anthony
  6. Rosa Parks
  7. Harriet Tubman

Interesting list. Although I’m not sure the Amazon queen is a real person so I don’t know why she would be on the list. (O.o) But who am I to argue with a trusted encyclopedic resource that people rely on for research. The last 3 women on the list never even wielded a weapon of war. But they were fierce fearsome fighters nevertheless.

Live Science published a list of 12 women warriors and described them as “mighty”. They start their list with a woman in China. There are only 11 names below because Boudicca’s name is already on the Brittanica list.

  1. Fu Hao (military general in the Shang Dynasty)
  2. Gudit (Ethiopian queen)
  3. Tomoe Gozen (female samurai)
  4. Ana Nzinga (queen of Ndongo, an African-state)
  5. Khutulun (descendant of Genghis Khan, “wrestler princess”)
  6. Mai Bhago (Sikh warrior)
  7. Rani Velu Nachiyar (Tamil woman, fought against the British colonials)
  8. Micaela Bastidas Puyucahua (warrior woman of Peru, rebelled against the Spanish)
  9. “Dahomey Amazons” (Not mythical; real West African female soldiers)
  10. Buffalo Calf Road Woman (Native American; Northern Cheyenne warrior)
  11. Yaa Asantewaa (led the Asante people (Ghana, West Africa) in an uprising against the British)

History Hit’s list named 10 great female warriors. Since Boudicca and Fu Hao are on the other lists, they are not mentioned again. Thus there are only 8 names listed.

  1. Tomyris (Queen of the Massaegetae who waged war against Cyrus, King of Persia)
  2. Artemisia I of Caria (Greek Queen of Halicarnassus and ally of Xerxes I. King of Persia)
  3. Cynane (half-sister of Alexander the Great; but not half the warrior nor half the ambition)
  4. Olympias (mother of Alexander the Great)
  5. Adea Eurydice (daughter of Cynane, the half-sister of Alexander the Great)
  6. Queen Teuta (Queen of the Ardiaei tribe in Illyria, fought with Rome and lost)
  7. Triệu Thị Trinh (Vietnamese woman who freed her country from the rule of China, for a while)
  8. Zenobia (Queen of Syria’s Palmyrene Empire; defeated by Roman Emperor Aurelian)

Boudicca, the Queen of the British Celtic Iceni tribe, left such a mark in history that she was not only on the 3 lists explored, but her name ends up on practically every list of woman warriors compiled by any publication. I don’t know what makes her so great. In the end, she was defeated and committed suicide. If you’re going to be a warrior, die fighting! Her true story is that she was just a woman driven mad with anger and grief who used war to ease her pain and lessen her sorrow. It is likely she died still in tremendous pain and extremely sorrowful. (Feel free to disagree. I am not a professional historian.)

Fu Hao, the Chinese general was on two lists. Were it not for the discovery of her tomb in 1096, it is not certain the world would have ever known that she even existed. There is not really a lot of information about her military exploits. She wasn’t just a general but she was also a high priestess, and she was one of the wives of the emperor Stories about her life seem to more the stuff of legend than of facts.

MY OPINION: I don’t know if I agree with labeling all of these women warriors. The word “warrior” (at least in my mind connotes a brave person who is fighting for a noble cause like … let’s say … freedom from oppressive rule. Some of those women, like Olympias and Adea Eurydice were just engaged in a power struggle. What’s so noble about that?

This is a very fascinating topic and you probably want to know more. But I am not writing a book, just publishing a brief introduction. So below is the combination of the three (3) lists, in alpha order, with links for further research: Have fun exploring!

Charting the Course of History (Interesting Quotes or Misquotes(?))

When charting the course of history or human events, communication is critical.  Miscommunication, misunderstandings, errors in translations could result in the masses believing that earth is being invaded by aliens.
"One of the extraordinary things about human events is that the unthinkable becomes thinkable.”  - - Salman Rushdie quotes (Indian born British Writer, b.1947)

The link below is to a Cracked article will really give you pause and make you think long and hard, and choose your words carefully; especially when you are not speaking in your native tongue. These errors – misunderstandings – “mistranslations” - literally changed the course of human events.

6 Mistranslations That Changed The World

Here is a quick summary of 4 of the 6 mistranslations.
  • Someone misunderstood an astronomer's reference to “channels”, and next thing we knew there were Martians. Even though the “lost in mistranslation” mistake was finally explained, it was too late. People had bought into the idea of life on planet Mars. No turning back.
  • Nikita Khrushchev uttered a statement that was not properly interpreted by the Americans. The USA took it as a threat and before anyone could misspell the name “Nikita”, the United States and Russia were in a race for space!
  • The incident about President Carter's Polish interpreter will make your side hurt from laughing so hard.
  • But the mistranslation that caused two atoms bombs to be dropped on Japan? It's not funny!
There were two more mistranslations left, but couldn't finish reading the article. After reading the part about President Harry Truman's reaction to Japan's response as to whether or not they would surrender, my jaw dropped.

Could this possibly be the real historical record?

Alexander the Great - Boogie Man or Immortal?

The records of history indicate that is what Alexander the Great said when others informed him about his father’s conquests.

“My father will get ahead of me in everything, and will leave nothing great for me to do.”

Statue of Alexander the Great in Skopje, the capital of the Republic of Macedonia

Clearly, Alexander the Great was no prophet. However, he is known in Western history as a remarkable military leader. In India’s history, children are told he’s the “boogie man”. - Alexander was born on 21st July 356 B.C. - Although his name is not specifically mentioned in the Bible, many biblical scholars believe that he is the “mighty king” referred to in the book of Daniel the Prophet (Chapter 11). - The meaning of the name Alexander is: “man’s defender, warrior”. The name suited him. Almost everyone knows about this “hero” who set out to conquer and Hellenize the entire world. * Do you have an opinion about him? You can find mine at the link supplied below.
If you don’t have any thoughts regarding the actual historical person, care to share what you thought about the 2004 movie which starred Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie and Val Kilmer. Here’s a link to a review by Rebecca Murray, writer for About.com.
Her opinion as expressed in the article, summarily stated? She gave it a Grade C+. Which means: Eh! She didn’t think it was all that! Me? I thought it sucked! Bad plot. Bad acting. But that’s just me.

Artists I Fancy: Venice in Beautiful Color Images 125 Years Ago | Open Culture

Historical photography.  Below is a view of the Rialto Bridge, which spans one of the city's famous canals; Venice, 125 years ago.  Though not "real" color photographs, they have been colorized and as such more accurately reflect a lively period in late 19th-century Europe.  The Library of Congress' page on the photocrom process explains it: "Photochrom prints are ink-based images produced through 'the direct photographic transfer of an original negative onto litho and chromographic printing plates.'"

Have you always wanted to visit Venice?

Wouldn't it be even more interesting to travel back in time and visit 19th century Venice?

You can do so through this wonderful collection of photographs.

Interesting Tidbits About Roanoke Colony, aka The Lost Colony

It seems some of history's mysteries will remain a mystery.  Like the disappearance of England's first colony in North America; the Roanoke Colony, known to may as "The Lost Colony".  Different people have their "speculations".  In an episode of the popular TV series, "Sleepy Hollow" they threw out a "probability" of what might have happened. It as totally unbelievable but the show was entertaining.

This is a well-known unsolved mystery in American history. Evidently, a group of people traveled from England to the New World (America) to settle in a new home. One of the colonists, John White, went back to England to get supplies, etc.

“When White finally arrived back in the colony on 16 August 1590 CE, there was no trace of the colonists in the abandoned stockade except one word carved onto a tree trunk: 'Croatoan'. This was the name of an island some 80 kilometres (50 miles) distant and suggests that the colonists had decided to move there, perhaps for greater safety. White was unable to investigate that island because of storms and was obliged to return to England. One can only imagine his frustration at having to abandon his family. The Roanoke colony then became widely known as the 'Lost Colony'. Nobody has ever discovered the final fate of the Roanoke colonists but the most likely explanation is that they were killed, sooner or later, by Native Americans in revenge for Lane's aggression in 1585 CE.”
“Finally, research by archaeologists in the region, conducted since 2010 CE over a ten year period, has uncovered artefacts which suggest the colonists integrated with the local indigenous tribes.”
What could have possibly happened? Isn't it obvious? They were probably attacked by the natives. Likely, the colonists who tried to resist and defend themselves from an attack were killed AND whoever was left, likely women and children, were taken and assimilated. But since nothing is documented, we can only GUESS!!

In other words, NOBODY KNOWS!!  When I saw this information I was really hoping to know "the rest of the story".

Fascinating Facts About Ancient Egypt

Ancient Egypt is a civilization that seems to fascinate everyone.  From the pyramids and the Sphinx, to tombs of the pharaohs, to the fact that the Egyptians are credited with inventing cosmetic make-up and jewelry.  Ancient Origins is a wonderful online information resource that everyone should subscribe to, if interested in studying the history of mankind; especially when it comes to learning about ancient civilizations; or ... to put it i their words: "Reconstructing the history of humanity's past".

Interesting article. My thoughts? The mummification process sounds like a desecration of the human body and a waste of money. “From dust thou wast and to dust thou shalt return.” (Gen 3:19) Thus, the decay of the body after death is a natural process and it will happen with or without mummification; brain, internal organs and all.

PRESENT DAY APPLICATION: Not much has changed in modern times. Before my husband passed away he did the research and instructed us to have him cremated. I see why. If you decide to go the other route of a casket, burial place, etc., the funeral homes will nickle and dime you to death! We did a comparison because one of my sons did not like the idea of cremation. However, when we started exploring the cost, my son remarked: "𝘋𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘰𝘮! 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘢𝘥𝘥 𝘰𝘯 $300 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘭. "

I know I was supposed to be sad and there was no disrespect to the dead intended, but I could not help laughing because that's what it looked like. Also, I admired my husband for thinking in advance and giving us his blessing to choose the "cheapest method" to dispose of his remains. My husband was always frugal about spending. I realized that he was even frugal when it came to dying.

When you travel it is good to know historical facts.  Modern-day Turkey, officially the Republic of Turkey, is a country strategically located between Europe and Asia, and its leaders have an integral role on the world stage. The Asian part of Turkey was at one time called Asia Minor and was a part of the ancient Roman empire. Later, Turkey became part of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Its historically religious, political, and cultural significance, including the fact that its largest city was once the capital of three empires ~ Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman ~ should not be discounted or minimized.
